Hi, my name is Chris from Pacifica, CA...about 400 miles North of you in the San Francisco Bay Area. I love Quad fishboards, especially my Mandala and Kane Garden. Usually I am surfing between Half Moon Bay and San Francisco. I stopped by in about a year ago but only just came across the website. I loved the exhibits you have there, especially the vintage surfboards. You have some great history their, keep up the good work. I added a link to your site on my links page at http://www.surfingcal.com

My name is Jim Snyder and I want to say Hi to all surfers young and old.  I learned to surf in 1958 near the old Standard Oil pier in El Segundo, Calif. (we would spend many long hours after surfing removing the tar from our bodies using mayonaise)   All of us young guys would practice there until we were good enough to surf at 42 street in El Porto (now North Manhattan Beach).  We knew if we would lose our boards in a wipe out that the older guys would steal them and use them for the rest of the day. I surf at Old Mans every once in a while when the water is warm. My sons learned to surf there and we have great memories of surfing and the BBQ in the evening.  Anyway, I was deep into the sport and collected many Surf Posters and I used to help with the projector when the surf movies were shown in the auditorium at El Segundo High School and other schools where they would let me. I have a few original surf movie posters (Surf Safari (1959), Big Wednesday (1961), Surf Mania (1961) ) that are in excellent condition. I also have many others.  I would like to loan them to the Surf Museum for display.  If this is something that you are interested in then please email me.  Thanks for all your hard work, Jim Snyder

Aloha, Pe hea oi? Kou inoa – Walter Simpson, 53 years old. Living on Maui, Hawaii for the past 24 years. Born and raised on Oahu, Hawaii. Surf all different types of boards, depending on location, types of shoreline, type of swells – steep/sloping, etc. Favorite board is my 9’0” long board, which I ride in surf up to double overhead. I also have 10 other boards here and one on Oahu for when I travel over to that island. My boards range from 7’2” up to 10’0”, mostly guns for the speed. One of them is the board I learned on in 1966, a custom 8’2” Phil Edwards pintail. That board has been retired for a while and just sits on the shelf, still surfable and not many dings either. I grew up surfing with Larry Bertleman, Michael Ho, Buttons Kaluhiokalani, Mark Lydell, Willie Grace, Tony Moniz and his brothers and a bunch of other braddahs. I also hang out with Rodney “Handsome Bugga Productions” Kilborn. He IS the promoter for the Pe’ahi “Jaws” Contest. We worked with and helped him to get all together for the first contest where we didn’t even have prize monies, so everyone that entered had pizza and a wooden calabash bowl for their prize. These guys are really cool to have entered with only these for prizes. Kind of like a warm up for the real event that happened the following year.

Hey. Its Fast Fred. That might not mean too much, but I was the Bass Player for Dick Dale and the Deltones in late 61/early 62. I replaced Brian, and then went on to play in a 'review' in Las Vegas, and then joined up with Richard Berry (auth: Louie Louie!)

I recently have been in touch with Art (guitar) and Dick, hisownself, and thought I'd drop by the museum. I saw the guest book, and HAD TO SIGN IN and say Hey!

Dear HB Surf Museum

I drug about 24 of my Ukulele Jam members to your grand opening of "The Jumping Flea", a documentary about ukuleles and the folks who play them.  I think everyone enjoyed the ukuleles music.  We sure got a kick out of it!

Kudos for a wonderful job.  The reception before the film was extraordinary.  The film was a fine tribute to this tiny powerhouse of an instrument.  Natalie... you, Jody and Kotch did such a great job on this.  The whole town of Huntington Beach should have been there!

I'm not a surfer, but I grew up on the beach here, and can say that the Huntington Beach International Surf Museum is doing a fabulous job of preserving the heritage of our surf culture.

Oh well, it was a great time and I can still impress my students with the stories. :)  Surfed last week during the storm (36 degree water!) Thank God for snow days!  Keep surfing...

Great Uncle Lorrin "Whitey" Harrison

Heya,
My name is William Dean, born and bred in Southern California (for a long time).  I'm surprised you haven't added my great uncle, Lorrin "Whitey" Harrison to the Walk of Fame yet!  As you probably know (don't you?) Whitey was and is a surfing legend, here and Hawaii, and probably anywhere waves are big enough to ride.

But you don't have to take my word for it, how about the words of Gerry "Mr. Pipeline" Lopez in Nov. 12 issue of Surfing magazine:
"And I like to think Loren [sic] Harrison was pretty hardcore. Every time I talked to him -- and I only talked to him in the last 20 years of a solid 60-year surfing career -- he was as enthusiastic as anyone else and he was already in his 70s. There was a story he told me from back in the early '50s or late 40s. He was out on the North Shore driving around with his wife and the surf was really big. And they drove out by Haleiwa and were looking out there and Avalanche was breaking. And guys were just starting to talk about Avalanche. And he was like, 'Why don't we paddle out there tandem and take a look at it? It's really safe from the channel.' So she reluctantly agreed. They paddle way out there and a big set comes in and closes out the channel and washes his board away from him. So he and his wife are way out there in the channel, and the current runs pretty much straight back out to sea, and they're hanging on to the buoy and he's just shitting. Because there's pretty much no one around, there were no surfers there back then. And he's hanging on to the buoy with his wife thinking, 'What am I going to do now?' And finally, he said, by the grace of God, he somehow spots his board coming back out in the rip. And he swims like a son of a bitch and gets it, paddles back and gets his wife, paddles in. And meanwhile, a whole crowd of nonsurfers, just local people, have gathered around, figuring this is it for them. And they're like, 'Oh, you're lucky.' And he said he went back to Waikiki and the next day Duke Kahanamoku scolded him for taking his wife out there. Can you imagine? Being scolded by Duke Kahanamoku. [laughs]"

Or there's Whitey's bio at Surfline: http://www.surfline.com/surfaz/harrison_lorrin.cfm

For that matter, the folks writing about San Clemente surfing calls Lorrin "the legend of legends" : http://www.sanclemente.com/HeritageCenter/Surfing.htm

So, what do you say?  Shouldn't Whitey Harrrison be on the Walk of Fame?

Thanks!
best wishes
William Dean (great nephew of Lorrin Harrison)

Hi  I have surfed everywhere!. I finally got to see Dick Dale " The king of the surf guitar" live here on the east coast , Farmingdale, Long Island, new York . At the Downtown. he was awesome. I am a retired Lifeguard , now I'm in Electronics, I had 4 different surfboards, A "keoki" made in Hawaii, a "Bunger", a "Cambell Whip" and a "Dewey Weber" , The cambell whip was a cool board that had a 6" lift at the nose , for nose riding and "hanging 10" The Cambell whip was stolen from the top of my 67 impala Station Wagon, at Oregon inlet South Carolina ! while I was sleeping in the car in 1969. Can you believe that yea, I was sleeping in the car when it was stolen. Oh well ! That's life, at least I had it for a while !!!!, I'm 54 years young now and I still body surf better than anyone around me !, Keep on surfin..........Glenn G. Walsh ( surfer).

I say Huntington Beach, I say thank you

Can't figure out if I lived in HB or HB lived in me.
Early 1960's was a beautiful blend of oil and water.
Sweeping large vacant plots of land.  Not like now.
I don't want to go back because I can't.

Those lucky souls who saw the town back then will always have the "tint" of surf and party.
Chuck Dent was crazy beautiful.
Gordie was wacky crazy.
Bobby Leonardo was quick to punch.
Frog was tight and eloquent.

That's HB, a state of mind, a time and place of awesome beauty and strange contradictions.

Oil and water.  Sanity and insanity.  Sea breeze and surf.
Perfect old thoughts for a light snooze.

HB has a face lift.  She's now is a painted lady bought by corporate interests.
Like I said, I don't want to go back because I can't.  The town doesn't recognize me anyway.
She has too much make-up on and it looks goofy on such a beautiful town.
Like a high school girlfriend who you laughed with and shared lunch with.
Now she sits in a corvette.  Now she barely waves.

Yeah, I moved...but damn I miss her!

I was in town for the weekend and i was wondering if the museum displays old boards? Guess I should come down and visit... See, my grampas old  gun is just collecting dust in my friends garage and i am constantly being told that it is "special" i think it is too big too heavy but it is a pretty sweet piece of history!!!
anyway, if you do display old boards, even old ugly ones i would be more than happy to bring it down...Unless, you require that i donate it, i dont think i could part with for good..Who knows..
maybe one day Catalina will sink and the surf will again be big enuf for the "fallin' tree" i call
my gramps gun!!!!!
pray for surf..

I was a member of the Breed East Surf Club, (Quincy, MA) and The East Wind Surf Club (Hull,Ma) in the late 60's. What a great time I have had surfing. was the best board i've ever been on. now i have a 5'6" FLY double-wing

Surfing Records

Hi from a non surfer in South Africa.
Recently on Discovery TV or it may have been Transworld Topsport there was a guy in California who surfed every day of February 1976 which was a leap year and had 5 Sundays in the month. He has surfed every day since and will surf every day this leap year February which again has 5 Sundays, it happens every 28 years.
Do you know if there is a web site covering event.

i awoke @ 4 or 4:15AM. to the PBS documentary about the surf museum.WOW. i grew up [well , was raised] in iowa. corn surfing is very underrated. i own [and treasure] a 1964 Hobie super surfer skate board and have attempted to surf only once ['67-'68, santa barbara]
the museum site brought back a flood fantasies and desires, dreams of the nomad, follow the sun, surf bum. listen to the advise of a near 60 year old cancer and heart disese 'sufferer'- dream if you must, surf if you can !!!
thank you [more than i can ever say] for the images !
unforgetable, transendant, glorious. thank you.

Great to see you have the Surfing Museum up and running! I grew up in Fullerton and we'd take the bus down Harbor to HB for fifty cents there and back (had to hide the boards though, they wouldn't let them on the bus). HB doesn't look the same, I drive by and miss the place after it became red tile commercial architectural. I design exhibits now, so I understand how important it is to preserve the heritage of HB's surfing legacy!

Best Wishes,

Wm.

I first started surfing when I was 9 back in Cocoa Beach, Fl. I moved to Colorado and there is not anything to surf. Snowboarding is not exactly the same thing. Too may restrictions. So needless to say the last time I surfed was 13 years ago. Last year my wife and I took a vacation to Hawaii. we went to Oahu. I finally got another chance to surf. You never realize how much you miss something until it's gone.

Purpus and David Takayama. I had a paper route and watched Greg Noll shape many
boards. My favorite spots were the cove@ Palos Verdes and the Redondo
breakwater. I was a Junior Lifeguard every summer. In 1964 I moved to Texas and started
to made wake surfboards and surfed the Texas coast. I joined the Navy in 1965
and was stationed in San Diego. I lived @ Ocean beach and surfed every where
from Baja to North San Diego County. I was transferred to Camp Pendleton in
1968. I surfed San Onofre and all the breaks north before the marina was built.
When I got out of the Navy I started college in Oregon. I surfed the Oregon/
Washington coast from 68 to 71. I then moved to Santa Barbara ansd surfed that
stetch of coast from Ventura County to Halama and other secret spots. I moved
to Gig Harbor, Wa in 1981 and continue to surf this coast and Canada. I started

Hi, The closest I ever got to surfing was Body-surfing 60 years ago at Asbury Park, NJ. It wasn't even called body-surfing then, just "riding the waves".

Here in Sleepy Hollow, IL, we have nothing surfable. Lake Michigan out in Chicago? I don't know.

Now I'm looking for the earliest history of surfing. I read somewhere that Mark Twain once surfed in Hawaii? Is that so? Any connection to Herman Melville's Polynesian romances?

Also, is there any relation between surfing culture and the Tiki Bar style phenomenon?

Sincerely,
Norma S. Hass

I started body surfing at about 7 years old at the California beaches, started board surfing at about 12, in 1957. Both of my boards were long boards, 9' 2", and 9', both of them were Layman. I stopped board surfing in the fall of 1960 when my dad moved our family to Rapid City, S.D. I moved back to California summer of 1962 when I started college at San Diego State. Never went back to board surfing, but body surfed as often as I could, and still do. Well, I'm 58 now and still miss the ocean . . .

I still surf, though not nearly enough. I'm living in Hood River, Oregon, which makes warmer waters quite a trek.
To Alfred Kuhia... I wonder if your uncle, Kealoha Kaio knew my dad, he was surfing and competing over there in the early years. He was also there staying at Makaha during hurricane Iwa.

Hi! I just stumbled across your web site. Pretty cool. I learned how to surf when I was 14 in Carlsbad, Ca. Before long it was my main interest. During my High school years (late1960's and early 1970's) surfing was all I cared about. It was during the "short board revolution" I nearly stopped surfing for a few years when I first was married and having kids (1980's). But one 4th of july when I was about 30 my wife, kids and I were on the beach and the waves looked really fun. I paddled out an old surfboard that I still had and even though my arms hurt from being out of shape I was hooked again. I've surfed pretty regular ever since. At age 49, I love my 8 foot egg board. Kind of a "mini long board" Modern long boards are cool but I prefer the way my 8 footer turns. There is nothing in life quite like surfing which surfers understand and non-surfers never quite get!! One day I will get up to Huntington Beach and visit your museum. Keep up the good work.
Bye-eeeeeee..take care...stay loose....Dave

I'm not a surfer but I'm doing some research on a 60's surfer in Hawaii, Conrad Canha. Conrad is my uncle but I grew up in Texas except for a few short years living in Hawaii in the early 60's. I remember him as always working on surfboards or out riding waves. My mom (his sister) would take us to watch him. Anyways, my parents divorced while we were young and my brother and I went to live with our dad in Texas. I always remained in touch with my mom who later left Hawaii for the Mainland but I never knew much about her side of the family. I have seen Conrad mentioned in some surf articles and he is shown surfing in Endless Summer I. Does anyone have any more information about Conrad's past surfing history, photos or anything ? I was able to contact Conrad about 4 years ago and talked to him shortly by phone. He is very reclusive and hard to get a hold of. Thanks for any info.

I started surfing in 1960 at Carpinteria, California.  Spent most of my time from 1960-1965 riding the Ventura Coast (C-Street, Stanley's, Rincon) and then The Hut when I moved down to Paradise Cove.  In 1965 went out at B&E's next to Hobson's Park and a 2-foot wave sucked out and smashed me into the sand, breaking my neck.

I couldn't surf again for years, then gave up on it --- until I got the hair back up last year and went with all my surf buds down to Morro Negrito, an island off the coast of Panama.  Now we're heading down to Costa Azul for a couple weeks of surfing in August.

It's great to be back!  If only I had the strength I had when I was 16!  J

I have been to downtown main street in HB several visits...and the Surf Museum is the place to visit if you are from California or any state in the USA or country in the world...it is a great place to see HISTORY of SURFING and how the technology of the surfboard has evolved and the most memorable events in surfing history ...great gifts too...the music, and the t-shirts are collectors items ! One thing I want to know is ..."where is Clint the Surfer" I heard lots about ? and Trey the Surf Comedian?

best wishes to all,

I was reading a post back down 4 or 5 and he mentioned the pipe down by the pier in Huntington that pumped out warm water. I have stood under that for very long periods of time. I think it was the sewer, But hey on a cold day it was great. I don't surf anymore I miss it but I have no knees for it ( From Knee Paddeling) I miss Huntington, I remember when the Plunge was there and when Gordies caught fire when he was under the Pier, I bought my second board from the fire auction for 10 bucks. Only had a little nose burn. I learned to work fiberglass on that one, and later worked at Jacks Surf Shop across from the peir doing repairs..Surfing will always be a part of me. And huntington will always hold fond memories.

My name is Amanda (Mandy) Hansen. I surf primarily at Pleasure Point in Santa Cruz, California. I am fairly new to the world of surfing, but I can't imagine my life without it. If you are truly a soul surfer, I believe the first moment you get up on a board, it will change your life forever. I know that it has changed mine in many ways. I think that surfing makes you step back, take a big look at the vast world around you and realize how lucky we are to share the ocean with otters, dolphins, other sea creatures and most of all each other. If you are a real, true surfer- it reaches in grabs a part of your heart and soul and will never let go. So, go out catch some great waves, get a little scared- but be safe, and share with your fellow surfers. Hey we are all out there to get away from what stresses us in life. Surfing is my religion- and it keeps me afloat!
Stay Forever Stoked!!!!!!
P.S. This website is wonderfully done- Congratulations and Thanks.

Hey, that makes you and dad in your...oh that's right old surfers never die they just go hang out at Wendy's WindJammer and talk about the big ones.
Bob says do you remember having Rose doing the movie shots of you in the morning ... and Rose says she seems to recall you bumming some cig's from her you never returned...and a few cold ones.
Heading down to the "trestles" and hitting the "wedge" are a few of those favorite things.
It's been awhile since they've surfed the West coast but the whole dang family, including grandkids in tow make a yearly pilgrimage for a plunge in the sea, whether it be the N.C. shores or balmy Bahamas there's never getting that salt water out of your veins.
Take care and may you always find your sweet spot.

Hi everybody,
Nice website, I was born in San Pedro, lived in Seal Beach, Huntington Beach, North Shore (Velzyland) Hawaii in the late 60's and 70's. I was one of the very few girl surfers back then. I knew Corky Carroll back in the day, don't know if he would remember me, I was a punk kid then.

Lived with and was in love with a big wave rider on the North Shore (Velzyland) name Bucky. Hey Bucky if you see this email me.

Greetings surf lovers! I'm supposed to be working right now but just spent an hour reading emails from surfers all over the world! What a big, beautiful global community. For all you women out there who always wanted to surf but might be intimidated, check out www.surflasolas.com. My friend and I went to this all-women surf camp a few years ago and it was an amazing time. Great spot in Sayulita, Mexico near Puerto Vallarta. Surf instruction by famous "Surf Diva" company from La Jolla. I live inland now but dream about waves all the time! Peace to surf lovers everywhere. Melanie

Yes, we do have some waves on this part
of the texas coast(Galvseton Island). Yesterday, Oct.3, 2002 we had some head high surf, that was fairly clean: Thanks to the hurricane in Louisiana. If you want to surf late in life, eat right, exercise, and take care of yourself. (less beer/more vegetables, etc.)
Surfing since 1967, hope to do it some more. God Bless You.

Hi,

I was 23 in '76 and just graduated in engineering from the University of Colorado. I spent the following summer in Boulder reading and trying to figure out what to do with life while living with my girlfriend Barbara. I spoke with several engineers in my field and none of them seemed to happy. So I left Barb at summers end and hitch hiked out to Oregon and worked my way down the coast. One night I fell asleep on the beach, not knowing if the tide was coming in or going out. I was sort of pursuing a dream of surfing. That has always been the dream.
Work consisted of cutting lawns, painting hotel rooms for Arvind in Eureka, sweeping barns, all of which after two weeks landed me in San Francisco. There I walked a couple of blocks off the coast highway into a nice area and spotted a run down house. I stayed there for a week or so cleaning for the husband as the wife was not quite rooted in reality. By now I was missing Barb and had to decide between going down the coast and following the dream or buying a $93.00 plane ticket back to Colorado and getting on with the serious business of life. Being a workaholic I bought the ticket and went back.
Now I'm 50 and have just returned from surfing out at Newport with my 16 year old son. It was our fourth surfing trip in the last two years. He loves it. I bought him a used board from Jack's Surfboards and I bought a foam beginners board. Thanks to to a surfing instructor named Mat from Jack's who gave us some instruction last time we were there, I was standing up on the board after the break. Mat said we should take a video and send it in for th $10,000 worlds funniest prize. I didn't care, I was laughing and having fun after a long long time. Well time is short at 50. See you at guard house 28 at Christmas break unless it's before then.

Yep I'm from Wales U.K. Nice to see so many people from different countries on the site. I'm 55 Years (old, young, ageless, whatever) and will be retiring to Lombok soon to build a house on a piece of land I've bought with my wanita. I'd appreciate any info on the availability of boards to buy out there. I presently ride a 7'9" made locally in Anglesey with bonzer fins fitted and occasionally a Freebird quad fin popout amongst many others. As I intend to sell them all when I move I am interested in buying a couple of Bics out there and a couple of custom boards, anyone know of any surfshops there? Have fun everyone, enjoy it all you've got a pleasure that will last you a lifetime.

My first board was an 11 foot Dewey Weber in 1958, then a Con in '60 (which I rode from Ventura County Line down to Dana Point) selling it in '62 to help pay for years of education away from the Pacific. In 1978, I moved to Schofield Barracks, HI and bought an old Weber to re-learn, then surfed the North Shore & Makaha on an 8.5 foot "Ryan Dotson". Louisiana has no surf so I have evolved into a hunter, except for my last body-surfing opportunity on Tortola in 1992. My wife just found my old Pendleton plaid shirt I wore with wheat jeans & huaraches to the Santa Monica Civic to watch anything Bruce Brown presented. It's simply amazing how time flies between 18 and 58. Fun fun fun! J.S. Slack III Baton Rouge, LA.

I surfed more when I was younger, but picked it up again last summer. I
love the sport though, and spend a lot of time on the beach. You can find
me usually at Silverstrand, or at the point. I dont have my own board
yet(again) and use one of my husbands if I want. He has a collection of

artifacts of the past culture it represents to visualize it but also the

started surfing H.B. down at the jetties around 72 , peddling our bmx bikes
with board under arm 12 miles up and 12 miles back after a full day in the
water. The Wind and Sea shop, donuts in the morning next door, the endless
point breaks in front of the condos, what a wonderful way to grow up. The
stories I could tell, scary times night surfing, grunion hunting by the
lights of the pier, beach parties that still burn bright in my mind. All the
elements that made Huntington beach what it is today. I now live in

Subject: My Board from Australia now in Your Collection I was very interested to learn that my old malibu board had been acquired for your collection. This was a 9ft 6 inch board with a paisley nose, red bottom, black striping, a tapered stringer and a single fin. (The fin was broken when the wind flipped the board off the roof of my car before I could tie it down. I repaired the fin by tapping in a second long bolt. I do not know if this is still the way it is set up.) Your representative traded a solid timber board for it from the Islantis Surf Shop at Phillip Island, in the state of Victoria in Australia. The board apparently came from the US in the 70's. I bought in the early 90's at a garage sale. I paid $20. Eventually I traded the board as part payment on a new malibu. My name is Rob Ewart, I am 53 and have been surfing since I was 14. I started on a 9' 6" board and have now come back via the full route of tiny boards, skateboards made out of metal wheeled roller skates, snowboards, wave skis and sail boards.

I am glad that there is a museum devoted to such a great past time. Surfing has become an important part of my life. There is nothing better then to be sitting out in the surf, waiting for a set. Seeing the sun come up over the hills, with the peir in the background, as the set just begins to roll in. The feeling is of pure relaxaction and being with nature.

Hey fellow surfers, I grew up in Bay Park, San Diego, Ca. Clairemont HS 1966. Hungout at Law Street. Surfed from the 39-K to Trestles. Worked at Gordon & Smith's shop when it was just a vacant garage. I had one of the first G&S boards that had multiple-colored inlaid stringers. Redwood, Walnut in the edges and a blue stripe down the center. Really great looking board. Lost it on a road trip to Steamers Lane. I started surfing when being a "Surfer" was a dirty word. Long hair.. Baggy trunks. And lord knows what went on in those vans we drove. I remember a bumper sticker from the times that read: "Don't laugh. Your daughter may be inside". I live in the great Pacific Northwest now and wish I could get back on a board (injuries from 'Nam prevent much "mobile" activity). Your site sure brings back some wonderful memories. Keep the sport alive and bitchin'.

I almost didn't make it in Betsy. I lost my board and finally made it to shore 3 miles down the beach in Miami. That was the good old days.

Just a few lines to say hello. Jim

HI I could not believe it when I saw Corky Carrol, ya that bring back old time, I started riding a 9' 6" board, I was only 8 or 9 years old, I had to get a belly-board, it was the best every one was riding big boards and I had this short board that I could stand on, the guys could see that I could move all over the wave, then they started getting shorter boards Gordon Smiths, Barry Benate, was making them. I friend his last name was Carrol, so we called him Corky, I grew up at Bronte and surfed Bondi and all the East Sydney, but my second home was a place called Tewantin just west of Noosa that was when surfing was only taking off, the good old days, I am 50 and still get out there. Don't see may entries from Britain so I thought I had better send mine from sunny (joke) Devon, England. Surf mainly North Cornwall and occassionally Fuerteventura, Canary Islands were my son lives. Jealous as hell of you Californian surfers as the water is a bit cool here.

Good luck to all. Aloha.

P.S. ride a mini-mal, sorry,

Pete

Unfortunately I live 200 miles from the nearest break, and being a family man etc etc, means surfing is down to only 3 times a year!!! Boo Hoo. Any how, the board I try to ride is a Second Skin made by Paul Blacker, 7' 2" fun board and with spring now approaching the drought my soon be over.

Surfing is cool because you can see God's handiwork in the swell. The power that dwells in the spray is sometimes overwhelming, however the knowledge of the Power makes it endurable. I ride for Christ.

Aloha from Kauai. My name is Scott and my family and I recently moved to Hawaii from Florida. I grew up surfing on the east coast of Florida but had to give while I was creating a life for my family. I always dreamed of surfing with my two boys and now I am living my dream. Seeing the look on their face after getting a good ride is the greatest feeling in the world. I ride a Papa Sau 9'1" longboard and they ride short Rusty's. We are working on getting mom in the water so we can make it a family affair. Come to Kauai. The waves are great, the water is warm, and the people are very friendly. Aloha, Scott

It's a dream board. Never have I enjoyed surfing as much as on this board. (Thanks to Donna & Skip). Keep up the good work with the web site. It's such a laid-back sport it would be easy to let the past slide. Thanks for not letting it happen.

Usually, surfin point in ventura. Trying desperatly to get a wave without a hundred people on it or getting snaked. The water is mild but lots of fun. Iam glad that there is a musem devoted to such a great past time. Surfing has become an important part of my life. There is nothing better then to be sitting out in the surf, waiting for a set. Seeing the sun come up over the hills, with the peir in the background, as the set just begins to roll in. The feeling is of pure relaxaction and being with nature. Thanks for reading

Great to see that the world truly appreciates those that are involved with the spontaneous arts–waves–and how to interpret them. I think it would be excellent to see more on the internet, at this site, of the people who truly changed the surfing world: Mark Richards, Shaun Thomson, Simon Anderson, Chappy Jennings, Rabbit Batholemew, Larry Blair, Ian Cairns, Jerry Lopez, Dane Kealoha, Buttons Kalhiokalani, Larry Bertleman, Cheyne Horan...and so many more...Tom O'neill of O'neill Wetsuites...the Rip Curl people in Torquay, in Australia...have you ever looked at a picture of Lopez at Pipe...triple overhead...just relaxing...like, it's just breathing, man...find these pictures and put them up...

This is great ! Not only do I believe a museum needs the artifacts of the past culture it represents to visualise it but also the human testaments to enrich it. My name is Dan Turek. I lived in Garden grove from the late 60's to the late 80's. Myself and abunch of school friends started surfing H.B. down at the jetties around 72 , peddling our bmx bikes with board under arm 12 miles up and 12 miles back after a full day in the water. The Wind and Sea shop, donuts in the morning next door, the endless point breaks in front of the condos, what a wonderful way to grow up. The stories I could tell, scary times night surfing, grunyun hunting by the lights of the pier, beach parties that still burn bright in my mind. All the elements that made Huntington beach what it is today. I now live in Washington state, grasping to the memories that I hold dear and paddling my "62" 9' Lyman that I've had since 1978. You can take the man from the ocean but you can't take the ocean from the man. retain2maintain. Gods blessings to you all

Hey everyone! my name is Sarah, but everone calls me Gina (don't know why...) and I live in Virginia Beach. it's a pretty good place to surf, but not as good as my fave spots in Oahu. I surf here in VA, Australia, and in the Philippines on shortboards. but I'm still definetly what you would call a beginner so I'm planning on surfing a lot this summer. If anyone has any info that I should know pre-surfing, helpful hints, cool spots that I should check out...basically, anything would be great, just post everything on this guestbook and I'll read it sooner or later. thanks so very much! If you haven't seen Endless Summer and Endless Summer part II, you ought to. Those are the best surfing flicks ever! (and I love Pat O'connell!) anyway, I must be getting back to my movie, Endless Summer part II, for the millionth time! Keep smiling and surfing ~ luv always, *Gina (Sarah)

Howdy, my name is Will and I live in Seattle, Washington. What a drag!! I grew up in Northeast Florida surfing a spot we called the blowhole. I also lived in Imperial Beach, California until coming to Seattle in 1979. I'm writing a term paper on surfing for my college english class, my teacher was less than thrilled when I announced my topic. I feel I've written a kick ass paper on surfing but in the process have developed an overwhelming desire to get back into the water. For me surfing was always a personal thing, me and the wave, the challenge of making it. I truly love this sport and after all these years away from wave ridding it hasn't diminished one iota. And yes I know there is surf in the Pacific Northwest but the conditions aren't worth it to me. The water is freakin cold and when it gets big it's like a washing machine though I'm sure there are exceptions. It's a three hour drive to the coast from suburban Seattle, the waves aren't worth it. Windsurfing is the big thing here. Anyway when school is out so am I, back to the land of surf, sun, and sand. Stay stoked you lucky devils, Wild Will :-)

comments: I was born and raised in HB (downtown). I live and surf in San Clemente now but I always refer to HB as home. I went to HBHS, (so did my mom), and was on the surf team. I loved every minute living HB. My dad and mom were and still are surfing parents along with my 2 brothers. The Surf Museum is great! It’s too bad the old SURF Theater building isn’t around, it would have been a great location for the museum. I have attached one of my favorite family pics. We’re at the beginning of the pier walking towards Main St. in 1967. I’m the little blond kid. Look at the banner over Main St. it says “Pepsi Cola Surfboard Contest”. Pretty cool pic!
The collection of surfing history contained within the walls of the Museum will rejuvinates anyone who has lost their STOKE! Keep up the colllection! Keep surfing alive!
