About the Artist: Bob Penuelas
Born and raised in San Diego, California, Bob Penuelas
began his career as a comic strip artist in 1980,
for Surfer Magazine, with the creation of the “Maynard
& the Rat” comic strip. After working
on the strip for five years, Penuelas introduced
the character, Wilbur Kookmeyer. The dorky little
character named Wilbur was a tremendous hit with
the readers and by 1986 Wilbur had totally eclipsed
the “Maynard & the Rat” strip. The
title was then changed to “Wilbur Kookmeyer”.

The
comic strip has been a regular feature in Surfer Magazine
for the past twenty years, appearing in a total of seventy-five
issues. In the summer of 2006, Penuelas announced the
retirement of the Wilbur Kookmeyer strip. In the August
2006 issue of Surfer Magazine, Wilbur said his final
farewell, and paddled into the sunset. |

In commemoration of 20 years of Wilbur Kookmeyer, a series
of Limited Edition Prints are now being made available
by the artist. The prints are framable reproductions of
some of the most classic strips that have appeared over
the years. Penuelas also plans on continuing the Wilbur
Kookmeyer name through other fun Wilbur products, which
can be found in fine surfshops up and down the coast.
Wilbur lives!
