One of Duke Kahanamoku's original hardwood surfboards (above) hangs in the International Surfing Museum.
The board on the left was originally thought to be a Bob Simmons board from a period when he was experimenting with stringers. It turned out, however, that the board belonged to a school teacher named Herbie Haster--the distinctive "HH" pattern represented his initials. To the right of that is a hardwood board such as the ancient Hawaiians might have used. |
